Kiki Valdes is an artist who likes to hurt a canvas before making love to it. In his attention-grabbing, expressionistic paintings, Valdes explores the tension between the figurative and abstract.He traffics in the weird and whimsical, creating absurdist narratives using cartoon masks and oddly bulging faces that lure viewers into a landscape that seems strangely familiar.

Typically Valdes paints his surfaces with bold, colorful backgrounds, then cuts shapes from canvas he later applies to his paintings to create layered and textured collages. He culls inspiration from pop cultural neurosis, combining childhood reveries, quantum physics, American secret societies, string theory, and loopy Disney and Nickelodeon characters to create images that both provoke delight and anxiety. Saturday from 7 to 10 p.m., the inventive talent, who is repped by the Michael Margulies Artist Agency, is opening “The Valdeziacs” at 101 Exhibit (101 NE 40th St., Miami), his new suite of works in which the funny battles constantly with the fantastical.

INTERVIEW WITH MARGULIES AGENCY BLOG:::

What is the story of the pieces we will see in the Valdeziacs?

I am mostly addressing and playing with form. I am using a general, non specific cartoon character…meaning it sort of looks like Goofy, Mickey Mouse or Ren and Stimpy. I try to use certain components
of those identifiable images and make them into complete abstractions, or a somewhat still-life of what those shapes can do. I use certain qualities of the curves, exaggerated eyes and big mouths to emphasize the duality of those compositions. There is a constant battle between the graphic figuration that is very familiar to us and what is familiar in painting.

Are you showing only new works or a mixture of new and previous?

All new, all of the work is from 2012 and 2013…I will have one or two small abstractions from 2010.. they relate to the current work.

How does the art relate to the title?

I shared my new work with Joe Margulies. I spent Armory week with him and his family. I was curious what he was thinking of the work I was making….and the first thing he said was…”ohh, The Valdeziacs.”
It struck a cord with his childhood. He was clearly referencing his nostalgia he had for the “Animaniacs” and counter imposed the title with my last name. The show was a cartoon from the early 1990’s. I never watched that cartoon…but his reaction was the best way to describe the feeling he got. It took him to a place from when he was a kid…meanwhile I never painted any of those characters. He was joking all weekend calling me Kiki Valdeziac. I struggled with a title all month long and I thought his reaction to my work was the most fitting for a title.

MIAMI – April - The Michael Margulies Artist Agency is proud to present “The Valdeziacs” a solo exhibition featuring new works from painter Kiki Valdes. “The Valdeziacs” is the culmination of Valdes’ most recent works. Many of the current paintings move into a new direction for the artist. Cartoon characters provide the first entry point to Valdes’ complex explorations of layered cut canvas collages, abstractions and figurative cartoon imagery. He paints the excited, cryptic images of bubbly faces and toon masks to convey a feeling of childhood nostalgia as a visual tactic to address space and form.

Valdes sees the cartoon imagery as a way to communicate and connect with a wider audience by conjuring memories. Cartoons have seeped into our consciousness since childhood and the artist uses those recognizable images and memories as prop for questions about painting and our obsession with the familiar. The new works in “The Valdeziacs,” the title in itself is a nod to childhood nostalgia, plays with form. Valdes turns various characteristics of known cartoon figures into a complete abstraction. Certain qualities like curves, exaggerated eyes and big mouth emphasize the duality of his compositions and create a battle between the familiar graphic figuration and what is familiar in painting. Valdes creates a place where darkness and light meet. He merges both and they open a dialogue and leave space for interpretation.
